The Mystic Society of Unconventional Men exists to celebrate curiosity, to openly question certainty, and to encourage the occasional act of mild rebellion against a life lived entirely on autopilot.

Side effects may include curiosity, laughter, and mild rebellion.

Curiosity First

The world is full of experts who already know the answers. We prefer asking better questions. Curiosity has led us to remarkable discoveries, terrible decisions, and occasionally both at the same time.

Defy Expectations

Society has strong opinions about what you should do, wear, buy, and become at every age. We respectfully acknowledge those opinions before wandering off to do our own thing.

Question Everything

Just because something is popular, traditional, or repeated loudly does not make it true. Healthy skepticism is encouraged. Cynicism is optional. Tin-foil hats are available separately.

Embrace Detours

The shortest distance between two points is usually the least interesting. Some of life’s best stories begin when you miss the exit, ignore the itinerary, or simply wonder what’s down that road.

Wander Freely

Whether across continents, hobbies, careers, or ideas, movement keeps the mind young. Standing still is occasionally necessary, but lingering there for too long is strongly discouraged.

Reject Someday

Someday is a mythical place where dreams go to collect dust. If something matters to you, start now. The perfect time has been running late for years.

Join Us!  And The Fight Against the “Responsible Adults”

Before EMSUM, I thought I was having a midlife crisis. Turns out I was just having a perfectly normal Tuesday.

  • Robert, Florida

I joined EMSUM after realizing that every major regret in my life began with the words ‘I should probably be more sensible.’

  • John, Maryland

I came for the questionable decisions. I stayed because nobody asked me to act my age.

  • Betty Jane, Virginia

EMSUM helped me realize that I’m not lost. I’m simply exploring with unusually poor planning.

  • Bill, California

Is EMSUM a cult?

Absolutely not. Cults are highly organized, have clear leadership structures, and know what they’re doing. We have none of those things. EMSUM is simply a gathering of men who occasionally make questionable decisions and then write lengthy reports explaining why they were excellent ideas.

Do we allow women?

Of course we do.

In fact, some of our finest questionable decisions have involved listening to them.

The truth is that the Society was originally conceived as a place for men who felt slightly out of step with the world and wanted permission to keep exploring anyway. We tried very hard to come up with a name that captured the same spirit while including everyone. Unfortunately, every version involving words like “people,” “persons,” “humans,” or “individuals” sounded either like a government agency or a support group for malfunctioning office equipment.

So we went with “Men.”

That said, curiosity has no gender, adventure has no genitalia, and refusing to act your age certainly has none either. If the philosophy resonates with you, welcome aboard. The only real requirement is a willingness to question the script and occasionally take the long way home.

Besides, every successful unconventional man eventually discovers that the women in his life were right about several things all along. We just prefer to arrive at that conclusion independently.

How do I become a member?

Membership is automatic the moment you find yourself saying, “You know, I wonder what would happen if…” and then actually doing the thing. Formal membership opportunities, newsletters, and other suspiciously cult-like offerings can be found throughout the site.  In fact, just look at the top of this page and click on Newsletter!

Do I have to own an RV/Van/Skoolie, travel the world, or retire early?

Not at all. EMSUM is not about buses, countries, or retirement. It is about curiosity. Some members buy buses. Others learn guitar, start businesses, move cities, take pottery classes, or finally tell their HOA where they can stick their regulations.

What if I don’t fit in?

Excellent. Most of us joined for the same reason.

In fact, feeling slightly out of place is considered one of the strongest indicators that you may already belong.
