Good morning campers, how’s it going?
Before we get into this, a minor gripe. I’m not a coffee snob, rather I’m a coffee idiot. Back in the states I drink Cuban coffee. Not for the taste, but for the punch in the soul. Dark, dark, dark … with equal hints of oppression and joy. It’s basically caffeinated sludge with crema on top.
And here overseas? I get Nescafe. Bleech.
Actually, here in Turkey the best I can do is Starbucks Turkish Blend. It’s … better? Turkish coffee is like dust, by the way. It makes espresso grounds look like chunks. But it also isn’t black, no matter how many full bags I dump into the damn French press.
Maybe that’s my problem … using a French Press with Turkish coffee produced by a hated American company. Hmmmm ….
OK, this morning’s weak-coffee-fueled post is … I’m bored. Or to be more specific, I’m boring.
We decided to plop ourselves here in Antalya Turkey for a whole month because (a) we were kinda tired of the hyper travel routine, and (b) we’re killing time before we get on a ship back to the states at the end of October. And we’re in what’s basically suburbia with absolutely nothing to do within walking distance, requiring a public ride of at least 30 minutes to get somewhere interesting.
With me so far?
So … how does one make compelling videos? LOL!
My last few have been deep dives into yours truly, or a look into the working life of a nomadic traveler. All of which have been good, but YouTube has said “nope” to all of them and they have not been shown to anybody new.
And here’s where you come in! 🙂
I follow a guy named Matthew (VanlifePlus) out of Canada and he does … wait for it … vanlife. 40-50 minute episodes, several times a week. And do you know what he presents? Well, let’s see. The past three videos has been on: (1) a broken curtain in his van, (2) a discussion of an ex-girlfriend, and (3) hanging out at a lake with his family.
And here’s the weird part … I watch him beginning to end. He can make the most common of daily activities interesting. And 34k views on those three videos agrees with me.
OK, back to Rick. (Sorry Matthew).
I have exactly one and half more weeks here before we travel to a new town (and thus have exciting new content! LOL!) and I want to experiment. What could/should I create video-wise out of a life in an urban-suburban apartment?  How can I “Matthew” you up from this fine place and this fine life?
So yea, that’s what the coffee is trying to get me to think of this morning. (Well, my morning, your middle of the night. I’m 7 hours in the future for US east coast denizens).
Have a thought? Drop a comment. Or if you’re the shy type … rick@rickhiggins.com.
OK, I need to wake Nikki up now. We’re hopping on the KC08 bus and heading towards downtown again, maybe even to another tram and a beach? Crossing fingers!
Thanks for listening to a still sleepy dude.
